Impact Story

Akari's Artistic Journey at the Children's Art Studio Richmond!

Meet Akari Alexis, a bright and curious 4-year-old who has blossomed in the Children's Art Studio Richmond’s program at the West County First 5 Center! Akari's mom, Arianne Dean, shared her experience with us, and it's clear that this program has sparked a love of art and creativity in Akari.

  • Arianne Dean, Akari's mom, shared that what sets the Children's Art Studio Richmond apart for Akari is the "hands-on, free-ness" to create. Unlike traditional classes, there are no templates, just open-ended exploration. Arianne added that this freedom allows Akari to experiment and develop her motor skills, even through simple actions like holding a paintbrush.

  • Since joining the program in January 2024, Akari's artistic journey has truly taken flight. Arianne has noticed a growing interest in art and creative expression. Akari gravitates towards building activities and toys with steps, inspired by the program's process-based approach. She also shared that this newfound fascination even led to a special project with her dad–who works in construction–and has readily embraced the opportunity to build alongside his daughter.

  • The program's influence extends beyond the classroom walls. Akari talks about color mixing and seeks out toys that allow her to create. Story time with a focus on color-mixing and combining fuels her curiosity even further.

  • The program's emphasis on celebrating each child's work resonates with both Akari and Arianne. The "show and tell" sessions at the end of each class are a highlight, fostering confidence and a sense of accomplishment in Akari.

  • Arianne doesn't hesitate to recommend the Children's Art Studio Richmond program at the West County First 5 Center to other parents. She recognizes the crucial importance of the first five years in a child's development, and especially appreciates the opportunity for social connection following the pandemic. Witnessing the positive impact on Akari has solidified her belief in the program's value.

  • With its sensory learning activities, music, and open-ended play, the Children's Art Studio Richmond offers a well-rounded experience. Arianne feels well-informed about what to expect from the program, and is happy with the focus on sensory learning and creative exploration.
